Shrub 50 to 150 cm, up to 200 cm, highly branched, voluminous, often gynodioic (plants with hermaphroditic flowers and plants with unisexual female flowers). Stems are erect, leafy, quadrangular; young stems are herbaceous, grey-whitish, sometimes reddish-brown, with long, ribboned hairs; old stems are woody, hairless and rounded.
